Hi, I’m Emily! I’ve wanted to study Medicine for as long as I can remember and I’ve been working really hard to achieve this for the past few years. I’m currently at my local sixth form studying the International Baccalaureate.
Something I have struggled with on my journey so far has been the fact that none of my family is in the medical profession (or have even been to university at all), so I don’t get much help from that side of things. However, I’m determined to never let this stop me from getting onto a Medicine course in September 2014.
In the past three years, I’ve completed work experience placements in and out of a clinical setting, but the most exciting so far has been my week in theatre at my local hospital. I’ve struggled at times to actually get a placement but I cannot stress enough how important they can be. Until you’ve been in a clinical setting you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into! They’re also a great thing to mention in personal statements and interviews – not what you’ve done but what you learnt from the experience. I’m grateful for the placements I have had because they’ve taught me so much. I’m now looking forward to my Pre-Med course at Imperial College, London in August and my weeklong placement in my local A&E department (Emergency Medicine is really what I see myself doing in the future)!
